“그들은 크리스마스인 것을 알고 있나요?” 는 1984년 BBC 저널리스트 인 Michael Buerk가 에티오피아의 기근 에 대한 관심을 끌었던 일련의 보도에서 영감을 받았고, BBC 뉴스 제작진은 10월 23일 Buerk의 보고서에서 기근을 “20세기의 성경적 기근”이자 “지구상에서 지옥에 가장 가까운 기근”으로 묘사하면서 기근을 처음으로 기록했습니다.

보고서에는 급식소에서 제한된 양의 음식을 받을 어린이와 너무 아파서 구원받을 수 없는 어린이를 선택해야 하는 간호사 Claire Bertschinger 가 등장했습니다.  이 보고서는 영국을 충격에 빠뜨렸고 영국 국민은 세이브 더 칠드런( Save the Children) 과 같은 구호 단체에 기부금이 쇄도하기 시작합니다.
