For Cartier, the most important part of “savoir-faire” is the union
between creative innovation and technical challenge.
Our challenge: to design a watch case that is soft, flexible, and fully paved.
Starting with the design.
Searching for a classic watch shapre from the Carties collection: the cushion.
Pushing it further by making it flexible.
A radical idea from the design studio, presented as a challenge to the manufacture.
To achieve this, the laboratory developed a gold mesh of 517 mobile elements.
A puzzle that was made possible using new technology and 3D printing.
As Cartier, time can also be counted in pixels. Continuing to innovate.
Underneath this flexible mesh is a new technological achievement:
a shape memory piece that allows the mesh to stretch and tighten again.
An elasticity test, carried out 50,000 times, guarantees that it will always return to its initial shape.
Taking its time.
The Coussin de Cartier watch was developed over 2 and a half years.
Making extremes coexist.
The watchmakers’ challenge was to integrate a precise and delicate movement into this soft creation,
while protecting it with a rigid and water-resistant case.

The watch’s cushion is composed of more than 1,000 precious stones.
The variety of diameters and colours makes the setter’s work even more complex.
The gold mesh is 3D printed on rigid supports that hold it in place during the setting process.
They are then cut by the jeweller to free the mesh.
15 hours of finishing and assembly give the cushion its remarkable flexibility.
Our savoir-faire is a constant dialogue between our designers, engineers, jewellers, and watchmakers
who unite the “savoir” and the “faire” all with one fine line.
